Search about blockbuster weight loss drug has been experiencing distress for decades. The most recent is the diet pill combination fen-phen Wyeth, which pulled off the market in 1997 because of links to the problem of damage to heart valves and lungs.
With obesity rates nearly 35% of the adult population, high expectations for the new prescription drug therapy first emerged over the last decade. Even the simple drugs are effective and successful release has the potential blockbuster.
Doctors and investors get first look at the first wide of the trio of new weight-loss drug this week. The hope is that new drugs can succeed where many others have failed in the use of weight loss medication.
None of the three drugs was a breakthrough in research. Drug manufacturers have made significant progress in understanding and treating the causes of overeating. Two drugs submitted for approval only combine existing drugs - an anti-convulsants and amphetamines a - but it has side effects that are worrisome. The third, new treatments, safer but less effective.
The FDA is expected to be able to post reviews pill Qnexa Vivus today. Arena Pharmaceuticals 'lorcaserin established to review the FDA panel in September, while Orexigen Therapeutics' Contrave will be the subject of the panel in December.
Qnexa showed the best weight loss results in clinical trials, with patients losing between 13% and 15% of their weight. But the drug also has the highest rate of patients dropped out because of side effects, which include memory and concentration problems that are very disturbing numbers of patients.
Contrave is also a combination pill, mixing antidepressants with anticonvulsant drugs. The drug has shown a weight loss of between 5% and 10% with side effects such as nausea.
Qnexa is a combination of two older drugs: a buy amphetamine and topiramate, an anticonvulsant drug sold by Johnson & Johnson as Topamax. According to the company, buy helps suppress appetite, while topiramate make patients feel more full.
