European Medicines Agency to delay marketing of sibutramine earlier this year, while Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) moved in June to tighten the conditions.
Australia are now using prescription drugs and should make an appointment with a doctor first, for consultation regarding weight loss medication and to seek advice on other alternatives than the weight loss drug, a company spokeswoman said in a statement
"Abbott today announced that it has voluntarily stopped marketing and distribution of sibutramine in Australia," said the spokesman.
Pharmaceutical company Abbott on Friday announced it would immediately stop distributing the drug sibutramine, sold under the brand name Reductil. "Patients who want to stop treatment before going to the doctor they can do it anytime."
"Analysis of the final results of the study confirmed SCOUT since there is increased risk of major cardiovascular disease events like heart attacks and strokes in patients with obesity and overweight," TGA said in an update posted on its website on Friday.
Abbott spokesperson said the company still believes the drug has "a positive benefit / risk profile when used properly" though would be withdrawn from sale following talks with the TGA.
Weight loss medication has side effects could include insomnia, constipation, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart palpitations, headaches, anxiety and dizziness.
